The Pride of Baguio City in the Philippines Products to Suit Everybody
3:00 PM
Apart from being a growing attraction for overseas tourists Baguio City in the Philippines is a big favorite amongst the Filipino people for holidays and for it's great local products. Smack bang in the middle of a rain forest, the city is 1500 meters above sea level with a cooler climate than the rest of the Philippines. However, that cooler temperature is still on average much higher than for instance the UK!
Whenever people visit the City of Pines, the one thing that they never forget to take back home is the local products of the city. These include vegetables, jams, choco flakes and peanut brittle. Vegetables are among the products which are the most popular in the city of Baguio. This is because a myriad of plants and fresh vegetables such as cabbages easily grow in the mild climate here.
Even with such an abundance, people tend to "hoard" vegetables to take back home. It is significant that vegetables and how they are grown in the area leans towards going organic. Baguio City's organic vegetables are becoming more and more popular each day because they are safer, healthier and they taste better than chemically grown produce. Restaurants that serve organic vegetables are becoming more and more popular. Now, vegetables in Baguio are not just fresh, they are organic as well.
Some of the other products that the city is proud of are the popular food items that can be found on sale in the market. These include peanut brittle, choco flakes, lengua and even strawberry and ube jams. These products are what people usually buy to take home to their friends and relatives. They are easily affordable - ranging from 50 pesos to 200 pesos. When you purchase these products you cant go wrong with the satisfaction and the taste of these unique food items.
Flowers are what Baguio takes great pride in. Since the launch of the Panagbenga or the Baguio Flower Festival in 1996, the peoples interest in the citys flowers have grown. The yearly festival lasts throughout the month of February. During that time there is floral float parades, dancing and music including rock and pop festivals. If you are looking for somewhere special to take your partner on Valentines day this city is perfect!
Many different types of flowers can be found in the market of Baguio City and each day, they are delivered fresh from the flower farms. Just some of the species that can be be seen while walking along the flower section of the public market are: various varieties of roses, sunflowers, hydrangea, bromeliad, marigolds, impatiens, Christmas cactus and poinsettas. Even rare plants flourish because of the mild climate and the best part is that these gorgeous plants and flowers are very affordable compared to other places. Indeed Baguio's flower industry blooms each and every day and the name 'flower capital of the Philippines' is well deserved.
Baguio is an unforgettable experiences for anybody visiting the Philippines. With trips to the right places and the right information a visit here is definitely worthwhile. While in Baguio, you should never forget to drop by the marketplace to enjoy the products the city offers to make the trip complete. Baguio City: the City of Pines and the Summer Capital of the Philippines, a place of solitude, leisure, recreation and of course products worth bringing home as a remembrance of a wonderful experience.
Three Reasons Why Visit or Retire in Baguio City
3:37 PM
The Cold Weather
Baguio remains the place to be (particularly) during the warmest months of the year; it retains its allure as THE Summer Capital of the Philippines. Where people find refuge during the continuous torrent of heat days on summer months. On such days - it is guaranteed: the temperature is always better in Baguio. A migrant friend of mine from Germany actually described our weather as "eternal spring." Because of its high elevation, the temperature in the city is usually 8 degrees Celsius (46 degree Fahrenheit) lower than the adjoining lowland locations. The average temperature is from 15-23 degrees Celsius (59-73 degrees Fahrenheit), with the coldest days occurring from November to February.
The Green Setting
Baguio is always described as a green city because of the multitude of pine trees spread over most locations and the grass ground cover here remains plentiful. The city downtown has little of these, as it has been built upon; but patches of green remain therein--particularly in Burnham Park which endures as our "breathing space" right in the heart of downtown. One used to be able to smell the refreshing aroma of the pine trees while enjoying a ride in the heavily wooded locations; but the scent of the trees is no longer as prominent due to the dwindling number of trees.
The Leisurely Mood
Planned by Chicago Architect Daniel Burnham in 1906, Baguio was designed as a city for 25,000 residents; this is the reason why the roads are rather narrow and the city is relatively small. It is because of this "intimate essence" in scale that a leisurely mood is induced upon its occupants. A good reason why, one may opt to raise a family here; shunning the "rat-race" state-of-mind that pervades highly-urbanized locations such as Metro Manila. Despite the temptation of better opportunities elsewhere, One may opt to stay in this "quaint and sleepy little town" where people are relaxed most of the time and commune with nature.
